Is Game-Based Math Learning Finally Coming of Age?
Kiili, K. J., Devlin, K., & Multisilta, J. (2015). Editorial: Is Game-Based Math Learning Finally Coming of Age? International Journal of Serious Games IJSG, 2(4). doi:10.17083/ijsg.v2i4.109
From this article, Kiili, Devlin, and Multisilta use different research that has been done regarding game-based math learning to suggest that game-based learning might be the solution to individuals experiencing difficulties in learning basic mathematics. They argue that there are relatively few mathematics learning games as compared to test mathematics. The first study that this article looks at is an experimental study on 3rd grade students who played Wuzzit Trouble and how their number sense increased. The second is a study on spatial numerical training where full body movement enhanced the efficiency of numerical training. The third study was on how two different mathematics video games lead to improvement of conceptual rational-number knowledge. The fourth was about how the Vector Tower Defense 2 game promoted mathematical problem-solving processes. The fifth was about an integration of game mechanics and learning content where mathematics content was mapped into the game concept. The authors concluded that these games supported mathematics learning. However, in many of the studies the authors mentioned that there were issues and problems with these approaches but did not elaborate on them. Even after these mentions, the authors continued to conclude that overall the game-based approach is beneficial for mathematical learning. This article nicely compiles different research to support game-based learning but it seems more as if they chose specific research to deduce their ideas rather than coming to a conclusion from a variety of studies. The article ends with a call for more high quality research on this topic, which I would agree with.
