Constructivism and Learning Mathematics
Moursund, D. (n.d.). Constructivism, Situated Learning, and Other Learning Theories. Retrieved May 28, 2016, from http://pages.uoregon.edu/moursund/Math/learning-theories.htm
Author David Moursund is a professor in the College of Education at the University of Oregon. He was formerly a professor in the Department of Mathematics and in the Computing Center (Engineering) at Michigan State University as well as the University of Oregon. His goal in creating the website is to help in the process of substantially improving PreK-12 Math Education. However, he did mention that some of the writings are just for his personal thoughts and the website has not been updated since November of 2007. In this article Dr. Moursund talks about different theories in Math Education. He mentioned that mathematics learning used to be dominated by the behaviorism, then had some cognitive learning theories, but he focuses on constructivism. He then explains how mathematics learning works well with the constructivism theory because math is cumulative and builds off of prior knowledge. He also mentions that researchers have come to the same conclusion about teaching and learning for ICT (Information and Communications Technology).
